More about the london Buddhist Centre

London Buddhist Centre Breathing Space Nalanda Crest in the courtyard Small Shrine Room Main Shrine Room

The London Buddhist Centre (LBC) teaches meditation and Buddhism in a way that is relevant to contemporary western life. It is a non-proselytising public centre, open to all, with no expectation of Buddhist interest/ involvement.

History

The LBC opened in 1978 in what was a disused fire station in London’s east end. Since its opening, a thriving Buddhist community has grown up around the LBC, which local estate agents have dubbed the ‘Buddhist Village’. This includes a vegetarian restaurant, a gift shop, a natural health centre, a charity shop and residential communities. T he LBC is one of the largest urban Buddhist Centres in the West, and perhaps the best-established Centre run by the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO).

Legal Status

The LBC is a registered charity (registration number 255420). The object of the LBC is ‘The advancement of the Buddhist religion', in particular:

  • to encourage members and others to live in accordance with the teachings of the Buddha,
  • to support ordained members of the Western Buddhist Order and other duly ordained Buddhists, at the discretion of the Council,
  • to maintain close communication with and work under the guidance of the Western Buddhist Order and in co-operation with other groups with the same objects.
  • to use the Buddha’s teaching to promote health and well-being for all.
