Breathing Space - information for mental health professionals
Breathing Space is the London Buddhist Centre’s programme for health and wellbeing. We run a range of Mindfulness Based Therapy (MBT) courses for people who have experienced depression, addiction, stress and chronic pain. MBT help people see the patterns of their mind – so that they recognise when their mood is beginning to go down. This can help break the link between negative moods and the negative thinking that so often triggers them. Our programme is based on three key principles that distinguish it from other therapeutic approaches:
• Mindfulness: the ability to be aware of what one is actually experiencing – and then to make creative choices about how to respond.
• Group learning: well-run groups provide an important forum for sharing experiences, helping to reduce social isolation and facilitate shared learning.
• Self-management: empowering individuals to harness their own resources and abilities.
Specifically, our programme includes:
• Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for depression
• Mindfulness-based Relapse Prevention (MBRP) for addiction
• Retreats and drop-in sessions for carers
• Bereavement courses
